# Build a form with Rewst's Form Builder
Learn how to build and customize your Rewst Forms

This documentation will walk you through how to make and edit a form manually, but the fastest way to build a form in Rewst is to ask the Rewst Agent to do it for you. Simlarly, the Rewst Agent may suggest building a form in response to your requests for larger automation goals.

## Create a new form

Forms start in draft status. *Workflow binding*, the step where you link your form to a workflow so that form submissions automatically trigger automation, is only available after publishing the form.

The part of Rewst you use to create and edit forms is called the *Form Builder*. To access it, navigate to **Automations > Forms**, and click **New Form**.
In the **Create new form** dialog, give your form a descriptive name. Remember, as you build more in Rewst, your list of forms will grow significantly. Following proper naming conventions will save you time in finding your right form later on.
The Form Builder is divided into three main panels: the left side menu for navigation and the [components](#components) library, the center Canvas where you drag and drop components as part of the form building process, and the right side menu for the form's properties.
### Form Builder Canvas toolbar
* The main page of your form will appear labeled as the name you give your form.
* The **Confirmation** tab contains the message that the user of the form will see after the form is submitted.
* Click **+** to add an additional page to your form.
* Click to view the version history for the form, which will appear in a dialog. In that dialog, compare versions side by side, and click **Revert to this version** to revert your form to a previous state.
* Click to view and add tenant organization overrides.
* Click to view the logic map for the form, which contains a breakdown of carry conditions, circular dependencies, and missing field references.
* Click to preview the form as it will appear to end users. From here, you can run a test submission of the form. This test uses real data when the workflow looks things up. Steps that would send emails, update records, or make other changes are mocked or blocked. Test submissions use the latest workflow version, draft or published for testing purposes.
* Click to view the live form.
* Click **Publish** to finalize all changes made to the form and save it in Rewst. If your form is bound to a workflow, this will also update the binding.
### **Form Properties menu**
* **Workflow Binding** - Once published, this section allows the form to be bound to a workflow so that submission automatically triggers workflow execution, passing form field values as input data. Note that for a workflow to appear in the selection list, it must first be published.
* **Auth & Access** - Set who can access this form. Options include **Owner Only**, **All Tenants and Owner**, **Selected Tenants Users and Owner**, and **Public**.
* **Theme Studio** - Set the theme for this particular form.
* **Light Mode / Dark Mode** - sets the default display mode for the form
* **Allow users to toggle light/dark mode** checkbox - when checked, end users can switch between light and dark mode themselves
* **...** - opens additional theme submenu
* **Create New Theme** - opens a new theme editor: external link icon indicates it opens in a new context
* **Clone Existing Theme** - duplicates an existing theme as a starting point
* **Import Theme** - imports a theme from an external source
* **Export Theme** - exports the current theme for use elsewhere
* **After Submit** - Choose where the form redirects to after it is submitted. Options include **Confirmation Page**, **External URL**, **App Page**, **Other Form**, and **Same Form**.
* **Static Inputs** - Set fixed values sent to a bound workflow on form submission.
* **Embed** - Allow external sites to embed this form runtime. This submenu contains a field to add chosen domains, as well as raw embed code to copy.
* **Form Schema Preview** - View the raw JSON data that makes this form. This also contains the option to export the form to a JSON file.
### Components

The Components library lists all available form field types, grouped into categories. Each category is collapsible and shows the number of items inside. When expanded, component tiles appear to drag-and-drop onto the Form Builder Canvas. Using the correct component for your desired use case ensures your workflows receive clean, organized data.
Each of these options will relate to your [*inputs*](/rewst-documentation/documentation/automations/workflows-in-rewst/data-input-and-output-input-variables-and-context-variables.md)**,** or the information that goes into the form. With the exception of the **Text/Markdown** field which is only used for presenting data to the end user, all other fields are used as data input and contain a field name, field label and field description. The field name is the variable name used within the workflow once the form has been submitted. The field label and field description are used to format the appearance of the form.

Right click on any component on the Canvas to expose the submenu for its settings, its related [Rewst Options Builder](/rewst-documentation/documentation/automations/forms/options-filter-filtering-in-forms.md) if the component relates to options, and to duplicate or delete that component.
The settings menu for each component contains a tab for visibility settings. Here, set conditions for when the component is shown. If a component is to be hidden, you have the option to disregard values inside of it, keep and submit the values, or keep the values and exclude them from form submission. This applies to fields inside the form that don't set their own policy.

Structure
#### Section
**Component settings**
**Section Heading**: This text will render as large bold text, H2, by default.
**Helper text**:This renders as smaller, regular-weight text directly below the heading.
**Footer**: This appears at the bottom of the section, below any dropped fields.
**Alignment**: Choose from Left, Center, or Right alignment.
**Vertical Spacing**: Set vertical spacing to none, small, medium, or large.
**Heading Size**: This can be set to Extra Large (H1), Large (H2), Medium (H3), Small (H4), Extra Small (H5), or Tiny (H6).
#### Group
This component is similar to Section, but best used for visually clustering related fields within a larger section, without the fill weight and space of a section heading.
**Component settings**
**Label**: The visible name of the group, this is displayed as a header at the top of the group container - e.g., "Group label". It's rendered in all caps with a horizontal rule extending to the right on the Canvas.
**Helper text**: This optional subtext is displayed below the label to describe the kind of inputs nested inside - e.g., "Describe the kind of inputs nested inside".
**Label Size**: This controls the size of the group label text. It defaults to Medium but can be adjusted to Small or Large as well.
**Label Alignment**: This controls the horizontal alignment of the label. It defaults to Left but may also be adjusted to Right or Center.
#### Divider
**Component settings**
**Divider Label**: This is optional text displayed centered on the divider line - e.g., "Divider label". When set, the label appears inline within the horizontal rule. Leave blank for a plain line with no text.
**Alignment**: This controls the horizontal position of the label text on the divider. It defaults to Center, but can also be adjusted to Left and Right.
**Style**: Choose the visual style of the divider line. It defaults to Solid, but may also be adjusted to Dashed, Dotted, or Invisible.
**Vertical Spacing**: This controls the amount of whitespace above and below the divider. It defaults to Medium but may also be set to None, Small, or Large.
Display & Media
#### Heading
**Component settings**
**Heading Text**: The text content of the heading, this is left empty by default. The Canvas shows a placeholder of *"Heading (H2)"* in italics to indicate no text has been entered yet.
**Alignment**: This controls the horizontal alignment of the heading text. It defaults to Left but may also be set to Right or Center.
**Vertical Spacing**: This controls whitespace above and below the heading. It defaults to Medium but may also be set to Small, Large, or None.
**Heading Size**: This sets the HTML heading level. It can be set to Extra Large (H1), Large (H2), Medium (H3), Small (H4), Extra Small (H5), or Tiny (H6). It defaults to Large.
#### Text Block
The Text Block is the most powerful display component in the Form Builder due to its ability to support the following:
Markdown **-** Content can be formatted using standard Markdown syntax, allowing for bold, italic, headings, bullet lists, links, and other rich text formatting without writing HTML.
Rewst context templating - The Text Block supports Jinja-style templating using the Rewst workflow context object. This means that the block can display dynamic values pulled from the workflow context at the time the form is rendered. For example, show the current user's name, a ticket number, or other data passed into the form from a workflow. This makes the Text Block useful not just for personalized or context-aware messaging.
**Component settings**
**Content**: This formats the body text of the block. This field supports Markdown and templating ({{ CTX. }}).
**Alignment**: This controls the horizontal alignment of the block's text. It defaults to Left but may also be set to Right or Center.
**Text Size**:This controls the size of the text. It defaults to Medium but can be adjusted to Smallest, Small, Large, or Largest as well.
**Vertical Spacing**: This controls whitespace above and below the block. It defaults to Medium but may also be set to Small, Large, or None.
#### Callout
**Component settings**
**Callout Content**: Here, enter the message text to be displayed inside the callout box. It's empty by default.
**Alignment**: This controls the horizontal alignment of the callout content. It defaults to Left but may also be set to Right or Center.
**Vertical Spacing**: This controls whitespace above and below the callout. It defaults to Medium but may also be set to Small, Large, or None.
**Variant**: This Controls the visual style and color of the callout to convey intent. It defaults to Info but may also be set to Default, Success, Warning and Error.
**Icon**: This controls the icon displayed at the left of the callout. It defaults to **Auto**, meaning the icon is automatically chosen based on the selected Variant - e.g., an info circle ⓘ for Info. Manually set the icon to Error, Warning, Success, Announcement, Locked, Highlight, Notice, Security, Tip. Message, Info, or None. For up-to-date iconography, see the complete drop-down list in the component settings.
#### Image
**Component settings**
**Alt Text**: Add optional alt text for your image.
**Image URL**: All images must be hosted with a public URL. Direct file uploading is not available at this time.
**Alignment**: Choose from left, right, or center alignment.
**Vertical Spacing**: This controls whitespace above and below the image. It defaults to Medium but may also be set to Small, Large, or None.
**Image Width (PX)**: The maximum image width or height is 4000 pixels. The max file size is 10 MB. Accepted hosted image formats are PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
Text
#### Text
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `text_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "Text input".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., "Enter text here...". It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Char Count checkbox**: When checked, a live character counter is displayed on the form - e.g., "0/500" - so users can see how much of their limit they've used. This is enabled by default.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Disabled tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to be uneditable when conditions set in this match. Disabled state doesn't control submission for your form.
**Set Value**: Check **Enable** to force the field's value when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Validation tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the value of the field must satisfy the rule set in this menu while the conditions match. This is also enforced at submission of the form.
**Computed value tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the field is calculated from other fields or numbers and recalculates whenever they change.
#### Textarea
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `textarea_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "Paragraph".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., "Provide additional details...". It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Rows**: This controls the visible height of the textarea in rows. The default is set to 3 rows.
**Char Count checkbox**: When checked, a live character counter is displayed on the form - e.g., "0/500" - so users can see how much of their limit they've used. This is enabled by default.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Disabled tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to be uneditable when conditions set in this match. Disabled state doesn't control submission for your form.
**Set Value**: Check **Enable** to force the field's value when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Validation tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the value of the field must satisfy the rule set in this menu while the conditions match. This is also enforced at submission of the form.
**Computed value tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the field is calculated from other fields or numbers and recalculates whenever they change.
#### Email
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: The internal identifier and variable name for this field, used when passing data to a workflow. e.g., `email_1`. This should be unique within the form and follow variable naming conventions.
**Label**: This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "Enter email address here".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., `you@example.com`. It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.

**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `url_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "URL".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., "". It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.

**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `Password_1`.
**Label:** This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "Password".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., "Enter password here". It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Maximum Length**: The maximum input for the field may be updated as desired.
**Display strength meter on form checkbox**: When checked, this displays a visual password strength meter to the user as they type.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Disabled tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to be uneditable when conditions set in this match. Disabled state doesn't control submission for your form.
**Set Value**: Check **Enable** to force the field's value when the conditions set in this menu match.
**Validation tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the value of the field must satisfy the rule set in this menu while the conditions match. This is also enforced at submission of the form.

#### Masked Input
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `masked_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label displayed above the input on the form - e.g., "Masked Input".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text shown inside the input field when it is empty - e.g., "000-00-0000". It helps guide the user on expected input format.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Mask Pattern**: This defines the input format using `#` as a placeholder for each digit. The default pattern is `###-##-####.` Custom patterns can be entered to match other formats such as phone numbers, ZIP codes, IDs, etc.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

Numbers
#### Number
**Component properties settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `number_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "Number goes here".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text displayed inside the empty input. It defaults to 0.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Step Change**: This controls the increment and decrement amount when using the field's up-down arrows. It defaults to 1. For example, a step of 5 would allow values 0, 5, 10, 15, etc.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

#### Currency
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `currency_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "Currency goes here".
**Placeholder**: This is the example text displayed in the field before the user enters their values.
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Currency Code**: This sets the currency type for the field. It defaults to USD. Clicking the drop-down selector reveals many other currency options. The selected currency code determines the symbol prefix shown in the input - e.g., `$` for USD.

* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

#### Slider
**Component properties settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `slider_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "Rate from 0-10".
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Minimum Value**: This sets the lowest acceptable value that the slider can be set to and defaults to 0.
**Maximum Value**: This sets the highest acceptable value the slider can be set to, and is defaulted to 10.
**Step change**: Set the increment between selectable values along the slider track. Defaults to 1. For example, a step of 2 with min 0 and max 10 would allow 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
**Show Value Label checkbox**: When checked, the current numeric value of the slider is displayed beneath the track - e.g., "0". It updates in realtime as the user drags the slider.

* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

**Validation tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the value of the field must satisfy the rule set in this menu while the conditions match. This is also enforced at submission of the form.
**Computed value tab**: Check **Enable** to indicate that the field is calculated from other fields or numbers and recalculates whenever they change.
#### Phone
**Component properties settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `phone_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "Phone number".
**Placeholder**: This is ghost text displayed inside the empty input - e.g., "Enter phone number".
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Default Prefix:** This is the country or dial code prefix displayed in the prefix box to the left of the input. It defaults to +1 for US and Canada .
**Allow user to edit prefix checkbox**: When checked, this allows the end user to change the country code prefix themselves on the form. It's unchecked by default, meaning the prefix is fixed as set by the Form Builder.

* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

#### OTP/PIN
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "OTP/PIN".
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.
**Tooltip**: This text is shown when the user hovers over the field and is useful for brief inline help.
**Code length**: This is the set number of cells or numbers for your code. The default is six.
**Use Conditions**: Check this box to expose additional override settings
* **Match**: Choose from all, any, none, or none all. Use the fields beneath to set your rules.
**Required tab**: Check **Enable** to set the field to become required when the conditions set in this menu match.

#### Checkbox
**Component settings**
**Field Name**: This is the internal variable name passed to the workflow on submission - e.g., `checkbox_1`.
**Label**: This is the visible label shown above the field - e.g., "Check box to agree".
**Helper Text**: This optional instructional text is displayed below the field to provide additional context or instructions to the user.

### Dates in forms

Form date formats — DD/MM/YYYY versus MM/DD/YYYY— are influenced by browser locale settings, not controlled by the application itself. IT admins could deploy the desired locale to all of their customers if they want to ensure consistent appearance. Setting it once in the browser will set it for all forms.

Follow the steps below for your relevant browser to use only the region you need, and remove the others for consistent behavior.
Mozilla Firefox
#### Open Language Preferences
1. Navigate to **Settings > General > Language**.
2. Under **Language and Appearance**, click **Choose…** next to **Language for displaying pages**.
3. Add only your desired language region:

Were you a Rewst Classic user? The Rewst Agent now sets org variables on forms for you as part of its building process. The below documentation outlines the manual process in Rewst, but it's recommended to allow the Rewst Agent to lead the way.

1. Place the relevant component onto the Form Builder Canvas.
2. Right click on the component.
3. Click into the **Settings** menu.
4. Click **Set Value**.
5. Choose **Always** for the prefill setting.
6. Click **{}**.
7. Choose your desired org variable from the drop-down list that appears.
8. Click **Save**.

to view the version history for the form, which will appear in a dialog. In that dialog, compare versions side by side, and click **Revert to this version** to revert your form to a previous state.

to view the logic map for the form, which contains a breakdown of carry conditions, circular dependencies, and missing field references.

to preview the form as it will appear to end users. From here, you can run a test submission of the form. This test uses real data when the workflow looks things up. Steps that would send emails, update records, or make other changes are mocked or blocked. Test submissions use the latest workflow version, draft or published for testing purposes.
* Click to view the live form.
* Click **Publish** to finalize all changes made to the form and save it in Rewst. If your form is bound to a workflow, this will also update the binding.
### **Form Properties menu**
* **Workflow Binding** - Once published, this section allows the form to be bound to a workflow so that submission automatically triggers workflow execution, passing form field values as input data. Note that for a workflow to appear in the selection list, it must first be published.
* **Auth & Access** - Set who can access this form. Options include **Owner Only**, **All Tenants and Owner**, **Selected Tenants Users and Owner**, and **Public**.
* **Theme Studio** - Set the theme for this particular form.
* **Light Mode / Dark Mode** - sets the default display mode for the form
* **Allow users to toggle light/dark mode** checkbox - when checked, end users can switch between light and dark mode themselves
* **...** - opens additional theme submenu
* **Create New Theme** - opens a new theme editor: external link icon indicates it opens in a new context
* **Clone Existing Theme** - duplicates an existing theme as a starting point
* **Import Theme** - imports a theme from an external source
* **Export Theme** - exports the current theme for use elsewhere
* **After Submit** - Choose where the form redirects to after it is submitted. Options include **Confirmation Page**, **External URL**, **App Page**, **Other Form**, and **Same Form**.
* **Static Inputs** - Set fixed values sent to a bound workflow on form submission.
* **Embed** - Allow external sites to embed this form runtime. This submenu contains a field to add chosen domains, as well as raw embed code to copy.
* **Form Schema Preview** - View the raw JSON data that makes this form. This also contains the option to export the form to a JSON file.

The Components library lists all available form field types, grouped into categories. Each category is collapsible and shows the number of items inside. When expanded, component tiles appear to drag-and-drop onto the Form Builder Canvas. Using the correct component for your desired use case ensures your workflows receive clean, organized data.
Each of these options will relate to your [*inputs*](/rewst-documentation/documentation/automations/workflows-in-rewst/data-input-and-output-input-variables-and-context-variables.md)**,** or the information that goes into the form. With the exception of the **Text/Markdown** field which is only used for presenting data to the end user, all other fields are used as data input and contain a field name, field label and field description. The field name is the variable name used within the workflow once the form has been submitted. The field label and field description are used to format the appearance of the form.
